Meanwhile In A Galaxy Far, Far Away....

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 26, 2009, 12:23 PM

Apologies for not being terribly attentive around here for quite some time. I've been very busy with commissions (both paid and unpaid) and paid photography work and I've taken on the role of club photographer (unpaid) for Wealdstone FC, all of which leaves very little time for my own stuff.

The work discussed above can't, for the most part, be displayed here, for various reasons, and the personal stuff that I have done is generally out of step with the prevailing orthodoxies/fashions that seem to dominate the corners of DeviantArt that I've tended to find myself in and posting it here would seem, therefore, to be redundant.

That said, there is work from all the categories above (including personal work) on aqueous-sun - the blog ([link]) if anyone is interested....

I read with interest your intelligent comment on raun's gallery 'From my experience, it seems that the photography 'community' is more likely to look at new stuff than the photo-manipulation 'community' is (tho' this may be because, in my opinion, the general (and I emphasise general) standard of photography work on here is higher than the photo-manipulation work.... ' and whole-heartedly agree with everything you said.
And BTW I like your gallery especially the use of textures and type.

Thanks very much for your kind comments.... I must admit that my view is starting to change now as the photography 'community' seems to be closing it's collective mind to anything that wasn't taken with an analogue toy camera....

Hmm... I remember being very resistant to the advent of the digital photography myself but once I had experienced it I became totally smitten, (but then I'm a very addictive personality). What fantastic joy to be able to achieve what I had pre-visualised! I've worked as a photographer (and assistant) for over twenty-five years so I could always take an alright photo, but all to often it would fall short of what I wanted. Those who keep their minds closed to innovation can't really call themselves artists because the idea of art is surely to strive to find new ways to see and do and express things. Like you said before, many people on here add their holiday and or pet snaps which isn't really art and there's not really anything wrong with that, but likewise these peoples views on what is 'good' or not shouldn't carry that much weight either. I don't have a great number of pageviews which until recently used to bother me a bit. Now I'm happy to think that if someone stumbles across my page and it provides them with some joy or amusement or insight then that's cool. The photography fraternity has always been preoccupied with equipment and gadgets. Most of the time it's what they get off on, but at the end of the day it's not what you've got it's how you use it... Something more photographers should be aware of. ok, rant over.
:iconaqueous-sun:
Personally, if I ignore the toy camera plague and the analogue mafia, one of the main reasons for my disillusionment with DeviantArt (not art/graphics/design/photography itself - I still create stuff all the time, I just don't see the point in spending time uploading stuff to where no-one's interested unless it's what I've already done....) is that many people on it seem totally unable to master basic politeness (saying thank you for a comment or a favourite) and most people seem to have no idea of the concept of quality control. If something isn't good enough (and we all know deep down, whether one of our own pieces of work is up to scratch or not) then don't post it. Put it aside and try again (harder!). If people only posted their best efforts, logging onto DA would be so much more pleasurable....
:iconhold-steady:
Maybe we're all guilty of poor quality control. One of the reasons I post is to find out what folks like and don't like. From that I can (hopefully) make a more informed decision about which images are marketable. I'm often astounded at some of the images (my own and others) which are liked, and equally astounded by those which are disliked. Even technically inept images are often highly praised. Bizarre...

thank you so much for the favs
